Björn Ironside is without doubt a real character from the Viking period, a successful warlord and leader. He is sometimes reputed to be the founder of a Swedish Royal Dynasty that ruled over that country until 1060. According to The Saga of Ragnar Lodbrok and His Sons, Bjorn Ironside was the son of Ragnar Lothbrok and Aslaug. Björn Ironside is said to have been the first ruler of the Munsö dynasty. In the early 18th century, a barrow on the island of Munsö was claimed by antiquarians to be Björn Järnsidas hög or Björn Ironside's grave. Hög, from the Old Norse word haugr, means barrow or mound.

According to sources, The Burial Mound of Bjorn Ironside, which is called Björnshögen or Björn Järnsida's hög in Swedish, is a royal burial mound located on Munsön island in Lake Mälaren and in Ekerö Municipality, Sweden. The mound is 20 meters in diameter and five meters tall. Björn Ironside was the leader of the expedition according to the later chronicle of William of Jumièges.
